The PlayStation Vita is still some months away from a yet unconfirmed launch date, but the developers working on the handheld at Sony are already talking about how the new device could be integrated with the company's home console in the gaming ecosystem.

Phil Rogers, who is the manager of the Research & Development division at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has spoken at the Develop conference about the possibilities of the PlayStation Vita and suggested that it could be used to control the PlayStation 3, at least to some extent.

He said, “PS3 can send data down to Vita and Vita can display it. You could use the unique features – gyroscope, touch front and back – as a control device for a PS3 game.”

He added, “You can run software on both devices and use the network to sync the game states. And that’s pretty good, because you then have the processing power of PS3 doing that work, Vita fancy graphics – however you want to do it. You’re not sacrificing the PS3′s CPU to be able to have a rich experience on Vita.”

At the same conference, Rogers has also confirmed the fact that the upcoming Hustle Kings game will have cross platform play between the PS3 and the Vita.

He also says that Remote Play will be included in the new handheld since the launch of the platform and that all developers who have launched games on the PS3 are being encouraged by Sony to add retroactive support for Vita into their games, although it's not clear how many will choose to do so.

Sony sees the Vita as the next big thing in the mobile gaming space and will launch the device for a price of 250 dollars.

More information about the handheld will probably be offered at both Gamescom and the Tokyo Games Show before launch.
