14 DAY TRIAL // An update to the stand-alone Microsoft Windows software development kit for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 4 is now available for download from Microsoft, designed to resolve issues introduced by the installation of Service Pack 1 on top of Visual Studio 2010. The Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Compiler Update for the Windows SDK 7.1 went live on the Download Center, being offered free of charge.
VS2010 users that installed the recently released SP1 RTM will discover that the x64 and IA64 compilers associated with Windows SDK 7.1 have been removed in the upgrading process.
The software giant explained that most likely, all the Visual C++ library files accompanying the compilers in the SDK have also vanished after the deployment of Visual Studio 2010 SP1 RTM.
Microsoft revealed that “the impact may be as indicated below:
If Visual Studio 2010 Professional is installed, then the IA64 compiler and Visual C++ libraries are removed.
If Visual Studio 2010 Express (any edition) is installed, then the x64 and IA64 compilers and Visual C++ libraries are removed.
Visual Studio 2010 Premium and Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate are unaffected.”
The Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Compiler Update for the Windows SDK 7.1 is designed precisely to fix this issue.
The Redmond company promises that by installing the refresh, the Visual C++ compilers and libraries removed by the Visual Studio 2010 SP1 installation, will be restored.
“We recommend that users of the Windows SDK do not install Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 at this time. We are currently working on an update to fix this issue and will update this page when it becomes available,” Microsoft stated.
Of course, those developers that want to deploy SP1 for Visual Studio 2010 and still use all the Visual C++ 2010 compilers can simply also install the update provided by Microsoft.
