Intego, the self-touted Macintosh security specialist, has announced the release of VirusBarrier X5 10.5.8, an update to its antivirus software for Mac OS X. According to the latest security report at Intego, the new version offers enhancements to the program’s logs, while improving performance for several key features of VirusBarrier X5.

Intego is not a new name on Softpedia's Mac news. The last time we reported of the company's struggles to keep Mac users out of harm's way was when Intego had posted a new advisory on its website, claiming it had evidence of a concept piece of malware. Naming the new proof-of-concept malware OSX/Tored.A, Intego announced it had updated the virus definitions of its flagship security app for Mac (VirusBarrier X5, of course) with a new malware class. However, the company itself noted that there was no real threat from this malware.

More recently, though, Intego has updated the actual VirusBarrier X5 application, not just its virus definitions. This update includes the following changes, according to the security firm.

– Logs now record more events: start and stop of real-time scanner, virus definition updates, and cancelled archive scans; – Log entries can be copied to the clipboard, and can be deleted individually; – A toolbar button in the log window allows users to reveal items logged; – Logs can be filtered by type: Information, Warnings, and Threats; – Malware are now logged in four classes: Virus, Backdoor, Trojan and Exploit; – Large increase in number of Windows malware detected; – Improvements in behavioral analysis for Microsoft Word and Excel macro viruses; – Bug fixes and performance enhancements.

Starting with VirusBarrier X5 10.5.3, the security program also includes the ability to scan the iPhone and iPod touch for malware. “VirusBarrier X5 is the only antivirus program that can scan files and applications on the iPhone and iPod touch in search of malware or files that indicate that exploits have compromised the devices,” according to Intego.
