A Virginia Tech server containing the information of close to 145,000 individuals who used the institution’s online employment application process to apply for a job over the last ten years has been hacked. The breach was discovered on August 28, 2013.

On the positive side, 128,321 of the applicants only submitted their names, addresses, employment history, education history and prior convictions. On the other hand, 16,642 of the impacted people provided their driver’s license numbers as well.

These individuals are being notified by Virginia Tech and offered one year of free credit monitoring services.

Virginia Tech representatives have told The Roanoke Times that the hackers managed to gain access to the organization’s systems because the security protocols put in place to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information were not followed.

“It was human error,” Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker noted.

DataBreaches.net has learned that the hackers’ IP address was traced back to Italy.
