Some time ago, we talked for the first time about Hollywood’s ever so annoying tendency of making movie posters look strangely the same, depending on the genre the movie belonged to. The video above is a more elaborate analysis on the topic.

Titled simply “WTF Happed to Movie Posters?,” it’s the creation of GoodBadFlicks and points out that, back in the day, movie posters were more than just pretty pictures: they also had meaning and made you want to see the movie by using really intriguing visual elements, not just skin, explosions, and cheap humor.

These days, depending on the movie you’re about to see, you can almost bet money on what its poster will look like and that’s because movie studios (all of them, with very few exceptions) favor molds for the artwork.

What we’re left with is a bunch of promo materials that all look the same and, months after the release of the film, mean nothing, have no artistic value. If you’ve seen one of them, you pretty much saw them all.

The video explains that these unoriginal posters are the result of too much money invested in other marketing materials, such as trailers. I think laziness too has something to do with it.
