14 DAY TRIAL // The pop music industry is cutthroat: if you’re a woman and you happen to have a good pop voice and people to back you up, you will still not have an easy climb to the top, because you have to dress a certain way, act and most importantly look a certain way.
Imagine how hard it must be for an artist to break on the pop scene if she’s an amputee.
Meet Viktoria Modesta, a Latvian singer / songwriter and model who is 26 and is out to challenge all ideals of beauty to propose different ones. Viktoria doesn’t like referring of herself as disabled and she wants the world to know that beauty isn’t what we’ve been told for years it is: beauty is everywhere around us, if only we open our eyes and look.
Fierceness is also everywhere, but especially in Viktoria’s video embedded below. It’s called “Prototype” and it’s released by Channel 4 with the aim of making us all “forget what [we] know about disability.”
Even if you don’t like Euro-pop or Viktoria’s rather out of the ordinary sound, you have to appreciate her natural inclination for the dramatic, the fierce. Here is a woman who’s not afraid to point the camera at her prosthetic leg because, as she says at the end of the video, some of us were born to be different and that’s more than ok.
Check out the video below to see a reinterpretation of beauty like never before. The video imagines Viktoria as the heroine of those who can’t fight for themselves, the symbol of a future revolution and it features outfits even Lady Gaga would be jealous of.
More importantly, it features one AMAZING spike dance, right towards the end. I know we’re used to having this word tossed around a lot these days, but trust me, this time it’s with very good cause.
