Vine Linux 5.2 has been released. The latest update to the Japanese Linux distro is mostly a bug-fixing release bringing a few new packages, patches and other various improvements. Vine Linux caters to the Japanese market and offers support for local scripts and input methods

"This is Vine Linux version 5.2 release. Since this is not a commercial version (Vine Linux CR), non-free applications and fonts are not included on the CD/DVD. Instead of proprietary ATOX X/Wnn7/Wnn8/VJE Japanese inputs and Ricoh/Dynacomware fonts, this ftp version contains Anthy and free TrueType fonts," the release notes read.

Highlights of Vine Linux 5.2:

• Security fixes and bug fixes; • Various package updates; • Fixes to the installer: - support for the FAT file system fixed in the installer; - support for SD card controllers; - support for FireWire controllers; - support for the openchrome graphic card driver; - support for the via-velocity, via-rhine, ne2k-pci, 3w-9xxx, 3w-xxxx • network card drivers; • Updated apt repositories list; • The Vine manual is included in the DVD edition.

Vine Linux 5.2 also comes with support for several new video cards with updated X.Org drivers. The Linux distro now supports the Intel GMA3150 found in Atom-powered devices.

There is also support for newer Nvidia cards in the 'nv' driver such as GeForce GT2xx, GT3xx, ION, and so on. The Ati driver adds support for Radeon HD3xxx, HD4xxx and so on. Finally, a new version of openchrome is now included.

About Vine Linux Vine Linux is the free version of the Linux distribution that doesn't come with any proprietary software, drivers, fonts and so on. Notably, it doesn't come with the commercial Japanese input systems but with free alternatives.
