A Universal Player recently released by Vimeo specifically targets iOS devices with HTML5 support, and the ability to detect the appropriate codec, file size and bit rate for any device.

Vimeo is a video sharing web site that provides an easy way for people to host and share their videos in high quality.

According to an announcement issued by Vimeo yesterday, all videos will be viewable in the best-supported format through the Universal Player beginning now.

A new Watch Later feature has been added into all versions of the player, through the Vimeo web site. The feature allows viewers to mark a video for future viewing.

"With the latest generation of browsers and devices, we've had huge demand for an embeddable player that works with HTML5 and on devices like iPad and iPhone," said Andrew Pile, Vice President of Product and Development for Vimeo.

As explained by the developers at Vimeo, the embeddable player detects the capabilities of the browser used to access the content, and will deliver the optimum player version.

Although HTML5 gains full support from Vimeo, Flash is obviously still supported.

The player also supports the h.264, webm codecs, “all while maintaining set customization and privacy features,” Vimeo notes.

"The new embeddable code is highly scalable and allows us to continue to add support as new browsers and devices are released, for example serving HTML5 to IE9 and our Flash mobile player to Android phones running Flash 10.1," it adds, in its August 17 announcement.

As for the brand-new Watch Later feature, as its name implies, the one button solution allows users to save videos for later viewing.

Built inside every version of the Vimeo player, the functionality is described by Vimeo as “an easy way to queue up a high-quality playlist to enjoy when people have more time.”

Vimeo's API will also add the Watch Later feature, the company said.
