Vienna, the popular RSS reader with support for Atom feeds, has been promoted to version 2.5.0.2500 Beta. The stable version of Vienna is still at 2.4.0.2401, while the latest beta adds support for plugins, a facility for automatic URL shortening, an ability to share articles via Twitter, Facebook and Evernote, as well as support for Web plugins.

Vienna is an open source freeware Mac OS X RSS reader with support for RSS/Atom feeds, article storage and management via a SQLite database, written in Objective-C and Cocoa. It features an intuitive interface allowing its users to add as many news sources as possible, yet keep a clutter-free view of the titles. By offering the ability to create groups of sources and smart folders, users can stay organized and focused on the latest subjects.

According to its makers, Vienna has been designed to provide non-technical users with simple news reading, while still aiming to be a feature-rich application. The new features included in the latest beta release are listed below, as provided by the Vienna development team.

- Add support for plugins. For details, see the Plugin Documentation. - Add a facility for automatic URL shortening via bit.ly that can be used by all plugins. - Add “Share with Twitter” plugin and toolbar button. - Add “Share with Facebook” plugin and toolbar button. - Add “Share with Evernote” plugin and toolbar button. - Web plugins (especially audio- and video-players) now continue to operate while in the background.

Vienna 2.5.0.2500 Beta doesn’t just include new stuff, but also a few code corrections. For instance, the new release fixes a bug that caused Vienna to become unresponsive after deleting a feed in Unified view, and updates the software to the current version of Sparkle, which prevents auto-updating to a version of Vienna that will not run on the user’s system. Lastly, the beta also fixes a bug where deleting a feed in Unified view mode would cause Vienna to stop working correctly.
