Vienna is a popular RSS / Atom news feeder for Mac OS X. The people maintaining the software bug-free have released a new version to address a number of issues emerged since the last update, as well as to include a few enhancements. Read on for the full scoop.

A true Mac app, Vienna features an intuitive interface allowing its users to add as many news sources as possible, yet keep a clutter-free view of the titles. By offering the ability to create groups of sources and smart folders, users can stay organized and focused on the latest subjects. Continuing to improve what is already a powerful RSS feeder, the Vienna development team has released Vienna 2.4.

The new version enables navigating the built-in browser's back/forward-list via left/right three-finger swipes, this of course being a MacBook-specific addition. Another such enhancement is the ability to navigate feeds via left/right three-finger swipes: Left for "Go Back" and right for "View Next Unread." Lastly, scrolling to the top/bottom of web pages and the article list can now be done via upwards/downwards three-finger swipes.

The keyboard shortcuts have been slightly affected too. According to the changelog, command-shift-g used as a keyboard shortcut for creating group folders is now used for Find Previous. The software now shows an alert when upgrading the database version, because it can take a while. The ability to turn off the animation of tab resizing has also been added. The team’s explanation for this change is, "It was slow, superfluous and apparently sometimes caused drawing errors in the tab bar background." Other notable changes in Vienna 2.4 include:

- Added ability to "Show XML Source" for feeds, which is now cached locally. - Added support for IDN (internationalized domain names) in the browser. - Added new supported blog editor (Blogo). - Increased the standard number of simultaneous refresh downloads to 20. - Redo browser and filter bar UI. Slimmer look, new buttons. - Vienna's UI now correctly dims when the application is [in] the background. - Enabled printing of web-pages from the built-in browser. - General code and build-phase cleanup, as well as minor speed improvements for some operations.

Vienna 2.4 needs Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later to run. Fans of the software can download the latest version using the link below. Two separate builds are available, one for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later and one for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
