The attack is kept under control because the cybercriminals are using a common user-agent

For the past 30 hours, the download infrastructure of VideoLAN (get.videolan.org) has been hit by a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attack. According to the creators of the popular VLC media player, the attack is still going strong.

“VideoLAN is experiencing a major DDOS attack targeting its mirrors infrastructure,” Ludovic Fauvet of VideoLAN wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

Fauvet says the attackers are utilizing a common user-agent. This has allowed them to easily mitigate the attack and keep the site up and running.

At one point, the download requests reached 200 per second, totaling 30 Gbps. Later, Fauvet announced that they had recorded 400 requests per second.
