It may be hard to imagine, but these sites are worth millions

We’ve recently seen that typosquatters recorded a high rate of success in their operations relying on this technique to promote their malicious websites and products. Researchers found another series of domain names registered for ill-intended purposes.

Websense experts came across site names such as victoriesecrets, wikipwdia, linkedid and craigslit, each of them hoping to attract as many users as possible, relying on the fact that many people rush to type a site’s address in the browser’s address bar.

Fortunately, for the time being, these domains don’t belong to cybercriminal organizations that target bank accounts and other sensitive information, instead they advertise all sorts of products such as free movie downloaders.

Of course, this could change at any time and the harmless ads could be replaced with other elements that do much more than steal an email address.

Website valuation tools reveal that some of these sites earn as much as $6,000 (4,200 EUR) each day, making them highly profitable for their owners.
