Verizon customers who are fans of the Star Wars series have probably gotten their hands on the limited version DROID R2-D2 Android smartphone.

The device is s customized variant of the popular Motorola DROID 2, which was launched about two years ago with Froyo on board.

The good news is that the DROID R2-D2 will be getting a major software update in the following days, which will bump the smartphone's software version to Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread.

Aside from that the handset will get lots of new features and improvements, along with a slew of bug fixes that needed to be corrected.

Hopefully, this won't be the last major update that the DROID R2-D2 will receive, though an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade is out of the question, at least for now.

Although the size of the update is only 12MB, it brings quite long list of changes in the security, messaging and applicattions area.

The following features will be added with software update 4.5.622.A957.Verizon.en.US:

- Enhanced security with DigiNotar security patch. - Increased browser cross-application scripting for enhanced multitasking stability. - Device will no longer automatically power on after it has been powered off. - Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System. - Successfully download and save purchased MP3 ringtones. - Camera settings will be saved, even after the device is powered off. - Increased device stability when keypad is opened and closed repeatedly. - Improved 3G data connectivity while using the Mobile Hotspot.

It is also worth mentioning VZ Navigator and V CAST Apps have both receive updates, and several known issues with the app shortcuts have been corrected.

With the latest Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update, DROID R2-D2 users will get the improved ability to access and receive Gmail messages when the Mobile Hotspot capability is in use.

Many other changes have been included in the update, but for the full changelog head over to Verizon's support site.
