Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is expected to bring to its airwaves in the near future a new smartphone that would run under the webOS operating system, namely the Palm Pre 2, which was already launched on the market in other countries.

The wireless services provider already confirmed officially that it would carry the new device on its airwaves, but did not offer specific info on the actual release date for this device.

However, some of the latest rumors on the matter suggest that the handset might arrive on shelves sometime in mid-February.

To be more precise, the guys over at PreCentral brought to the web a leaked document showing that February 17th might be the lucky day for enthusiasts.

Moreover, the said document also shows that the Palm Pre 2 might be released at Verizon with a price tag of $100 attached to it, upon the signing of a 2-year contract agreement.

No official confirmation on this emerged for the time being, but, given the long period of time that passed since the device was announced for the first time, we shouldn't be surprised if the rumor pans out in the end.

However, it should be interesting to see the Palm Pre 2 arriving at Verizon soon after a wide range of other highly appealing smartphones make an appearance on its airwaves, including the Apple iPhone, or some 4G LTE-capable Android devices.

Not to mention that the wireless carrier is also ramping up for the release of the first tablet PCs to sport the new Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform, such as the Motorola XOOM, which will be accompanied by other Motorola devices as well, including the DROID Bionic, a 4G capable Android phone.

HP/Palm would hold a webOS event on February 9th, and chances are that more info on this would be unveiled at that time, amid details on other devices the company plans on launching in the near future.
