Verizon and Qualcomm have reaffirmed their commitment to the Brew mobile platform and Brew devices, which will be announced by the carrier in the next months.

In the last couple of months, the Brew MP has grown up to become a full operating system, as new functionalities have been added, allowing developers to deliver new UIs, applications, as well as services.

For the non-tech savvy, Brew stands for Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless and is an application development platform created by Qualcomm for CDMA mobile phones, but lately GSM support has also been added.

The main advantage of the mobile platform is that developers can easily port their applications among all Qualcomm devices.

Verizon Wireless remains focused on providing innovative applications across all types of devices, including the millions of Brew and Brew MP phones used by our customers,” said Greg Haller, vice president, Consumer Solutions for Verizon Wireless.

Verizon also stated that it would be expanding the number of Brew and Brew MP devices available to its customers, with several new phones that would be announced “in the coming months”.

According to the carrier, most of these new phones will have a completely updated storefront, featuring a user-friendly and graphically enhanced mobile shopping experience.

Working with Qualcomm, we are excited to provide new options for those basic phone customers to enhance their shopping experience, along with providing even more options for developers to distribute apps, be successful and make money,” concluded Haller.

Developed by Qualcomm’s subsidiary Xiam Technologies Ltd, the new application storefront will also include a recommendation engine, which enables personalized app recommendations.

In addition, to make things easier for devs, they will also benefit from support of in-app purchases and direct carrier billing.

On related news, AT&T debuted one of the latest Brew MP smartphones, the HTC Freestyle, back in February.
