Today, Verizon Wireless went official with the United States cities that would receive coverage from its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network during the ongoing year, along with a series of airports that would benefit from the same enhanced speeds the next-generation mobile broadband technology can offer.

Lowell McAdam, president and chief operating officer of Verizon, unveiled at the CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2010 conference the carrier's plans to have the network available in 38 major metropolitan areas in the country this year, being able to offer connectivity to over 100 million Americans.

On top of that, the company plans the launch of its LTE network in over 60 commercial airports in the US, including airports in the launch area and others in key cities around the country.

The full list of metropolitan areas and airports that will receive LTE connectivity from Verizon Wireless before the end of the ongoing year can be found below.

“We are driven by the vision to provide ubiquitous wireless broadband connectivity and mobility to rural and urban Americans alike,” McAdam said.

“With our initial 4G LTE launch, we will immediately reach more than one-third of all Americans where they live, right from the start. And, we will quickly introduce 4G LTE throughout the Verizon coverage area.”

Verizon expects for the upcoming roll-out to position it as a global leader in 4G LTE deployment, as it would be able to offer 4G LTE average download data rates of 5 to 12Mbps, and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps in the field.

Basically, the deployment would improve significantly the data speeds that Verizon's customers benefit from today on the wireless carrier's 3G network.

According to the company, it can deliver a high-quality wireless broadband network with great coverage through leveraging its 700 MHz spectrum for LTE roll-out. The carrier already started installing LTE equipment at its cell sites around the United States.

The upcoming network should enable improved broadband services for a wide range of customers, including enterprise users, businesses and individuals.

“While Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network promises much more than speed, the first application gives employees the ability to work at significantly faster speeds and improved latency, increasing productivity and the opportunity to get work done where their business takes them,” the carrier mentions.

It should also be noted that the said 38 metropolitan areas are not the only cities that would enjoy 4G LTE from Verizon during the ongoing year, as the carrier also plans the launch of the new services in West Lafayette, Ind., home of Purdue University.

The public university is making use of a series of applications on Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, and the carrier is working with Purdue in exploring the manner in which 4G LTE technology would improve e-learning around the United States.
