Verbatim has just launched a whole new line of 2.5-inch portable hard-drives. The external storage media comes as a free space bonus for the notebook and ultra-mobile PC users. The devices allow the user to scale the storage space according to their needs, by adding 120, 160, 250, or 320GB hard-disk drives.

The manufacturer has updated its previous models of 2.5-inch external storage devices with a choice of a USB interface or a Combo USB/FireWire interconnect. All the external hard-drives are spinning at 5,400 rotations per minute and can deliver data transfer rates of up to 480MB per second (the maximum capacity the USB 2.0 standard can support). FireWire versions are limited at only 400 MB/s, but don't worry, you'll never get even near the maximum transfer rates.

The External HD series is powered directly from the computer via the USB or FireWire interface, which eliminates the addition of a bulky and space-consuming external power adapter. The drive is Plug-n-Play compliant and, once plugged in, the user gains access to all the data stored on the drive.

"Part of Verbatim's corporate strategy is to capitalise on this trend with an expanded line of External HD products that meet the diverse storage needs of consumers and businesses around the globe. Our new product range in a sleek black and silver design has been adapted to match the latest design trends in the laptop sector", said Kai Miroschnik, Business Unit Manager Multi Media & Peripherals Verbatim EUMEA.

The Verbatim external hard-disk drives are compatible with the latest operating system from both Microsoft and Apple. They can be used out-of-the-box with either Windows Vista or Leopard. Moreover, regular backup is always possible when running Apple's operating system, as the 2.5-inch drives come with the " Time Machine" back-up feature.

The complete series of Verbatim 2.5-inch Portable Hard-Disk Drives will be available later this month. The company has not disclosed their retail price yet.
