Vampires continue to be all the rage right now, so it's probably not that surprising that Universal is still hellbent on making “Van Helsing” happen. Writer, director and producer Alex Kurtzman says it's definitely coming out soon.

Fans will remember that the 2004 original film was a mess despite listing as leads two of the hottest stars of the moment, Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale.

Tom Cruise has been attached for the Helsing role for years, but Kurtzman won't go into this kind of details, saying only that the reboot will most definitely take a turn for the darker.

“I do feel like the Van Helsing that Anthony Hopkins plays in [Bram Stoker’s] Dracula is sort of the parody version of it, and the Van Helsing that Hugh Jackman played was obviously in a different place as well. I think that these kinds of movies have evolved a lot since then,” he says in an interview with CraveOnline.

“You know, The Dark Knight was a major, major corner-turning moment in the way that genre and superhero stories could be told. Really grounded in reality. Really grounded in really cool things. That’s what I’d like to do without sacrificing the fantasy element,” he adds, before also name-checking “Star Trek,” whose script he wrote.

A release date isn't mentioned but, with Kurtzman having just finished work on “Star Trek 2,” it's probably safe to assume this will be his next big project.
