14 DAY TRIAL // Chelsea Handler was one of the celebrity presenters at the MTV Video Music Awards 2014, which took place live at The Forum in Inglewood, California, and as per usual, her short time on stage again did not guarantee that she stay away from controversy.
As you can see in the video below, before introducing the nominees and announcing the winner for Best Male, Chelsea tried to make a crack about how she was one of the skinniest women to walk up on stage that night.
She’s no doubt referring to the likes of Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and even Iggy Azalea, who also showed up to perform, except for Kim, who was also on presenting duties. However, Chelsea somehow made this into a racist joke.
“They asked me if I wanted to present at the VMAs. And I said there’s gonna be a lot of big fat [bums] at that award show. So I will present, but you have to put me up after someone who is white. So thank you Taylor Swift for being so white!” she said, visibly amused at her own joke.
However, as the same video shows, when the camera zoomed in on certain members of the audience, they were less than amused.
As we speak, many voices believe that such a joke had no place in the awards gala and that producers should have never sanctioned it, if only for the reason that the show was heavily in the shadow of the racially-motivated unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, where an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer.
