VIA Technologies, a leading innovator of power-efficient x86 processor platforms, has announced today that its Eden processor has been selected to power the latest FUTRO thin client computer system from Fujitsu. The 500MHz Eden ULV chip features a low TDP of only one watt and is capable of delivering the necessary power required by the FUTRO S100 thin client PC, a desktop computer system featuring a fanless design and meant to be a virtual workplace solution.

“Our VIA Eden ULV processors allow the creation of a new class of fanless and silent devices that are today seeing significant growth in the enterprise,” said Richard Brown, vice president of marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. “The FUTRO thin client series from Fujitsu represents the leading edge of energy-efficient client computing, something we are proud to be a part of.”

The announcement marks another design win for VIA, which has recently been selected by Dell to power one of its low-power server solutions, using the Nano chips. With the Fujitsu FUTRO S100 thin client, VIA's 500MHz Eden processor has been coupled with the recently introduced VIA VX800 media system processor, which features the Chrome 9 HC3 integrated graphics core. The S100 system can support up to 1GB of DDR2 memory, has two USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port, Ethernet networking and an internal compact flash-based storage support.

Thanks to the integration of the VIA VX800 chipset, users will also be provided with full support for DirectX 9.0, as well as hardware acceleration of MPEG-2, MPEG-5, WMV9, VC1 video formats. The system is designed to be compatible with a range of server client infrastructures, including Linux-based eLux RL and eLux Lite, VMWare, Citrix and Windows CE 6.0.

“The Fujitsu FUTRO S100 offers business users extremely low energy consumption per seat, helping to minimize the environmental impact and expense of doing business in today's competitive economic landscape,” said Rajat Kakar, vice president, Clients Group of Fujitsu Technology Solutions.
