The collaboration between VIA Technologies, a leading vendor of power efficient x86 processor platforms, and Hewlett-Packard, the world's leading vendor of computer systems, has spawn some interesting designs, especially the Mini 2133 laptop. However, it now appears that the two are at it again, as they have just announced the availability of the new VIA-powered HP Compaq dx2040 Microtower PC, a desktop computer PC designed to deliver energy-efficient computing to users in the Chinese computer market. This is a significant design win for VIA, which is trying to promote its latest products, despite a tough competition from leading chip makers like Intel, AMD or NVIDIA.

“The HP dx2040 an excellent example of how our uniquely energy-efficient VIA C7-D processor offers great value for enterprise and business users,” said Richard Brown, vice president of marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. “Our scalable processor platforms allow businesses to upgrade their operations while minimizing power costs, overall expenditure and environmental impact.”

HP's latest dx2040 desktop computer system has been designed inside a robust Micro-ITX microtower chassis and is powered by the VIA C7-D processor, featuring a core speed of 1.8GHz. The overall system is built on the VIA CN896 chipset and can provide support for up to 4GB of DDR2 system memory, while the integrated VIA Chrome 9 HC graphics chip can enable support for DirectX 9.0 graphics. A number of configuration options are available, while other system specifications include 10/100 Ethernet LAN, six USB 2.0 ports, a media card reader and a VIA Vinyl Audio 5.1 surround sound.

“At the core of our 2009 strategy is the adoption of innovative, power-efficient technologies like the VIA C7-D processor, helping us to bring more value to business users in emerging markets. The decision to upgrade our product line with the HP dx2040 further implements this strategy and creates more long term value for enterprise customers,” said Tony Chou, director of Commercial Desktop PC, PSG, China HP.
