In an attempt at better focusing on its smartphone business, Sony sold off its laptop branch last year, to an investment company in Japan.

Since then VAIO became an independent PC company looking to make a name for itself in the busy market.

Well this week the company pushed out two new hybrid Ultrabook models in the form of the VAIO Z and Vaio Z Canvas (as spotted at Ascii).

The two devices are outfitted with a rotating mechanism reminiscent of the VAIO Fit family which allows users to position the device in various ways. The VAIO Z weights around 1.34 kg / 2.95 lbs.

As for specs the first model comes with a 13-inch display with 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution and an Intel Core I7-5557U clocked at 3.1GHz on the inside (of the Broadwell-U variety).

The laptops are offered with Intel Graphics 6100 and either 256GB / 512GB SSD options, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, two USB 3.0 ports, SD/SDHC, SDXC card readers, IEEE802.11 ac/a/b/g/n wireless support.

VAIO also throws in an 8MP camera and support for an active stylus with 256 levels of pressure sensitivity. As for battery life cycle, the producing company promises up to 15 hours of goodness.

The lappy has already been made available for purchase in Japan for the price of $1,600 / €1,402.

As for the Vaio Z Canvas, this model will be offered with a 12.1-inch display and similar specs. It will be available starting in April.
