Microsoft launched Windows 10 for phones preview for a total of six Windows Phone models, but contrary to what people expected, flagships such as Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 are missing from the list of supported devices.

Lumia 630, 635, 636, 638, 730, and 830 are the only six Windows Phone models that can be updated to Windows 10 preview for the time being, so it's easy to see how many customers out there got all disappointed with Microsoft's decision to ignore flagships in this initial release.

Comments posted on Microsoft's Windows 10 for phones availability announcement pretty much say it all: many of those who currently own a Lumia 930 or 1520 are outraged that they don't have the chance to try out the new OS version right away and blast the company for ignoring them despite the fact that they paid hundreds of dollars for their devices.

“I have stuck with Microsoft either their hardware or software for years and I should be someone who should have been able to access it but I was not. Because Microsoft choose to alienate the higher end market due to poor planning,” one user explains.

Others claim that those with low-end devices might not be so interested in trying out the technical preview build, and if they do it, they might not send the amount of feedback the company hopes to get.

That is because developers and more experienced users always go for the most powerful hardware available at a certain time, one user explains, adding that most go for the high-end 930 and 1520 to test their projects on Windows Phone.

Why the preview is not available on Lumia 930 and 1520

If we look at the bigger picture, Microsoft cannot be accused of ignoring its loyal customers. This is a preview build of an operating system and could be unstable and full of bugs, so those loyal customers might end up very disappointed after installing such an early product.

What's more, this isn't necessarily an OS release that needs to be installed by everyone, but only by those with solid testing knowledge. It's an OS build for Microsoft, and not for users, because the company needs to collect feedback in order to improve the product before the final release.

Microsoft has explained that the decision to skip Lumia 930 and 1520 for now (they will be both supported in a later update) is related to partition stitching, a new feature that makes it possible to adjust the OS partition dynamically and create space for the new OS.

In the end, it could be better to wait more and get a more stable Windows 10 build than to get it right now and swear all day long all over the web that it's full of bugs.
