Apple has released a new software update for Snow Leopard users running the latest version of the operating system. The Snow Leopard Font Update addresses issues displaying and printing certain OpenType fonts, Apple said.

Targeting Mac OS X 10.6.7, the latest incremental update to Snow Leopard, the 3.77 MB download “contains fixes for Mac OS X v10.6.7 that address issues displaying and printing OpenType fonts,” Apple outlines in a Support document.

[admark=1]Specifically, the update includes fixes that address an issue in which some OpenType fonts don't display correctly in certain applications; resolve issues printing from Preview; address an issue with PDF files not opening in third-party PDF viewing applications; and resolve invalid font errors when printing to PostScript printers, according to the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California.

Built on its predecessor TrueType, OpenType is a format for scalable computer fonts that retains the former’s basic structure while adding many intricate data structures for prescribing typographic behavior.

Microsoft owns the trademark for OpenType as the specification ‘germinated’ in their labs, according to Wikipedia, with Adobe also contributing to its development

Publicly announced in 1996, the OpenType standard continues to be developed actively and is moving towards becoming an open format.

OpenType fonts are used commonly today on all major computer platforms, mainly because of the wide availability and typographic flexibility it poses. This includes provisions for handling the diverse behaviors of all the world's writing systems.

There are two ways to update your Snow Leopard machine with the new specification.

1 - Access Software Update from your Mac’s Apple menu; allow the mechanism to find the update, if available for your system; select it and hit install.

2 - Download the standalone installer using the link below; double click the resulted DMG file to mount it; then double click the installer package inside the disk image and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update process.

This software update will require a system reboot.
