The University of Southern California (USC) has warned staff members, faculty, students and visitors regarding a security breach as a result of which credit card numbers may have been exposed.

The incident occurred after a third-party software system used to process credit card payments in USC dining halls was breached.

In the period between May 21 (possibly earlier) and June 21, the numbers of the payment cards that passed through the system may have been stolen, but fortunately, no other sensitive information was exposed.

The affected vendor has been notified of the breach and urged to address the situation.

In the meantime, the Los Angeles Police Department and the USC Department of Public Safety have launched an investigation.

Impacted individuals are advised to keep an eye out for any illegal transactions made with their credit cards and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.
