The University of North Florida (UNF) has started sending out notification letters and emails to more than 23,000 individuals after they've learned that a computer database containing information on students who have submitted housing contracts has been compromised.

According to the university’s representatives, the server has been secured, but the names and social security numbers (SSN) of those who submitted contracts between 1997 and the spring of 2011 may have been stolen by the “intruders.”

To help the potential victims, UNF is covering the cost of an identity protection service for a period of one year.

The institution has also made available a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page to offer further clarifications on the incident.

As we’ve seen on numerous occasions in the past few months, universities become the victims of hackers almost every day. Sometimes their systems are simply probed by white hats, while on other occasions they’re targeted by cybercriminals who try to steal sensitive information.
