University of North Carolina-Charlotte exposed the SSNs of 350,000 individuals

University of North Carolina - Charlotte representatives issued a statement in which they reveal that around 350,000 Social Security Numbers (SSN) were exposed as a result of a “system misconfiguration and incorrect access settings.”

The incident was initially made public in February 2012, but at the time the university didn’t provide many details.

“There were two exposure issues, one affecting general university systems over a period of approximately three months, and the other affecting UNC Charlotte’s The William States Lee College of Engineering systems over a period exceeding a decade,” reads the press release.

The issue was addressed after it had been identified, but during the large period of time, the names, addresses, SSNs and financial information of hundreds of thousands of individuals were accessible.

For now, there is no indication of misuse or identity theft, but people associated with the university or the College of Engineering are urged to report any suspicious activities to the educational institution or their banks.
