Founded back in September 2008, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group (SAFUG) is an organization whose main focus is on promoting the use of biofuels in aviation, and on improving on the efficiency of these environmentally-friendly energy sources.

To put it bluntly: as far as the members of this group (members such as Air France and British Airways) are concerned, cutting down on the environmental impact of the airline industry goes hand in hand with sustainable development in terms of fuel consumption and availability.

News concerning this industry informs us that, as of recently, United Airlines is also part and parcel of this on-going campaign intended to green-up aviations.

This means that said company has agreed – and signed to this agreement – to work close together with other SAFUG members towards potential developments in the scientific branch of the biofuel industry, and towards making aviation biofuels become widely available on the market.

The company's managing director for the department of Global Environmental Affairs and Sustainability, Jimmy Samartzis, explained how, “We are excited to collaborate with other industry leaders in our shared quest to advance sustainable biofuels.”

He went on to argue that, “We will all benefit from our collective work to find solutions to make alternative fuel available at commercial scale and secure a sustainable future for aviation.”

Environmental Leader informs us that United Airlines also agreed to the purchase of about 50 million gallons of sustainable biofuels, which means that soon enough the greenhouse gas emissions for which the company's flights were to be held responsible up until now will witness a considerable decline in their amounts.

Given the fact that, for the time being at least, the airline companies part of the SAFUG constitute a total of 32% of the global aviation fuel demand, it is quite likely that their turning towards aviation biofuels instead will result in considerable benefits for the environment.
