Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto determined in a new study that people who analyze and understand the source of their emotions are less likely to make hasty decisions, or take unnecessary risks. The work was carried out to see why people often let emotions take precedents over logical thought and judgment.

Numerous studies have recently been focused on emotional intelligence, and have showcased numerous advantages to exerting it, such as the ability to better control your reactions and impulses.

“People often make decisions that are influenced by emotions that have nothing to do with the decisions they are making,” explains UT Rotman School of Management professor Stéphane Côté, quoted by PsychCentral. This type of training, the team says, can also reduce anxiety.

Higher levels of emotional intelligence allow you to make more accurate decisions about the risk you are taking, for example when investing money in something. By analyzing what you do carefully, you can reduce the levels of anxiety related to your decision.
