Naughty Dog wants great gameplay mechanics

Naughty Dog, the developer of the upcoming Uncharted 4: A Thief's End third-person action-adventure shooter, promises to put the gameplay experience first, instead of the framerate, for example, as it will gladly sacrifice a 60fps performance in order to add more mechanics or options.

The new console generation has brought into question the importance of framerate, which is now a big technical factor alongside the native resolution of a title.

Naughty Dog itself proved just how big of an impact 60fps can make over 30fps with The Last of Us Remastered on the PS4, which allowed players to toggle between the two limits and see how the game feels.

Uncharted 4 is prepared to sacrifice 60fps

According to Naughty Dog, with its next project, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, the team is prepared to sacrifice the framerate in order to produce better gameplay.

Game Director Bruce Straley told Edge, via Videogamer, that Uncharted 4's gameplay demonstration at the PlayStation Experience back in December was locked at 30fps to produce the best results and ensure that everything went smoothly.

However, during the development process, the game runs at a higher framerate, according to Straley. Even so, this won't ensure a push for 60fps, as the developer emphasizes that gameplay will always trump the framerate.

"We're actually above 30, but we locked it [for the demo]," Straley explains. "We're going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player's experience, then it's our choice as developers to say, 'Well, we're going to go for the experience over the 60 frames.'"

According to the magazine, during its visit to Naughty Dog, Uncharted 4 ran at 37fps on a PS4 debug unit. Considering that there are still quite a few months separating fans from the debut of the game, which is expected in fall of this year, it's possible that many things will change in regards to the game and its performance on the PS4.
