The Naughty Dog development team which is working on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception for publisher Sony has revealed that it has gone as far as send people in the desert to chart its natural barriers in order to get the right feeling for being lost in the sand and recreate it in their game.

Justin Richmond, who is the game director for Uncharted 3, detailed how the team worked around the idea of putting players down in the middle of the desert while also creating an experience that is focused on more than moving through sand.

Speaking to Eurogamer, the video game designer stated, “When we said 'desert' the first thing all the game designers said was, 'Well, crap. How are we going to rein you in?'”

He says the team was really thorough in their research efforts, adding, “We sent guys to the desert and looked at desert reference and realized that the desert actually does have some natural barriers. There are dunes that are impossible to climb. We sent a couple of our art guys out there and they were trying to climb these dunes and the sand was just sliding. We get away with some of that kind of stuff.”

The developers at Naughty Dog have already made it clear that they are not planning to deliver an open world experience in the new Uncharted video game, choosing to control when the player does so that they can deliver their mix of exploration and combat at the right moment.

In his new adventure, pretty boy Drake will get some sand in his boots as he tries to find the Atlantis of the Sands, following instructions given by T.E. Lawrence, and, as always, finding that the place is also sought for by some bad guys.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception will be delivered to gamers on November 1, 2011, only on the PlayStation 3 home console from Sony.
