Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) play an important role in protecting a country against cyberattacks. Uganda appears to be well aware of it, which is why the country’s Communications Commission has set up a new CERT.

The CERT, which will complement the existing National CERT, is tasked with improving and securing Uganda’s communications services, New Vision reports.

The unit, comprising communications companies and Internet service providers, will monitor the web for cybercrime, terrorism, data breaches, cyber fraud and online child molestation.

The CERT will be responsible with enhancing online security by combating malware and spam.

The Communications Commission has acquired new equipment that will facilitate the task.

Local authorities have reported a considerable increase in cybercrimes over the past period. They blame it on the lack of proper legislation.
