Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 1.4 (a.k.a Gnarly Gnome) is out. Ubtunu Ultimate Edition is yet another Ubuntu-based Linux distribution which aims to bring major modifications especially in the installation process. According to its developers, this version of Ubuntu Ultimate incorporates a script which gives the distro a highly customizable level as it can allow you to choose which software to install and which not..

As it is said on its website, "you will find this version to be much faster & more responsive; due to the many enhancements to the kernel and being based on Feisty Fawn. " Among the cool and interesting enhancements, I could count here a script which comes up on boot and allows Flash, video drivers etc. to be installed and plays music as it downloads them.

However, among these kinds of enhancements this distribution does not bring too many new things. There is not big difference between Ultimate 1.4 as Live CD and its ancestor, Feisty. Regarding the installed version, here you'll find some modifications. For example, as Gaim no longer exists, it has been replaced by Pidgin, also Compiz has been replaced by Compiz Fusion. The upgrade process is made easily through the icon placed on the desktop and called Upgrade. When clicked, this icon checks for a newer version of the script which ultimately gives you your choice of distro path or custom allowing the selection of what would be installed. Then it gets and installs the selected software, thus building your Ultimate distro.

The future plans for Ubuntu Ultimate Edition include, as it is said on ubuntusoftware.info a "mime type"based application installer allowing apps/games to be installed from the developer's website, at no cost for the user. The developer said he also intends coding a "Ubuntu Ultimate News Engine", something like a light bulb that pops up in the tray area whenever a new release is available.
