Zimbra offers open source e-mail software server to Ubuntu

Zimbra offers a complete Network Edition server software version to Ubuntu Linux distribution. Network Edition program was a full-feature and supported version and so far, it was available only for Red Hat's Linux, Suse Linux from Novell and Mac OS X. The software offered by Zimbra is Java-based and it is perfectly compatible with any Web browser interface or an Ajax-based one. It also works with well known e-mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird.

"We're seeing real business using Ubuntu" - stated Zimbra Chief Executive Satish Dharmaraj.

He also said that even though the Ubuntu version is ready by now, Zimbra plans to formally announce it by the end of this month. Regarding the downloads registered by beta Network Edition, Ubuntu came out the second, with a major percentage of Red Hat's popularity.

Raven Zachary, analyst with The 451 Group claims that Ubuntu stated to gain much credit playing the server role. According to him, Zimbra's movement is a solid proof that customers see Ubuntu as a good server platform too. Canonical Chief Executive, Mark Shuttleworth considers the partnerships with the established software or hardware companies as profitable and important in the deployment of the open source ones. Shuttleworth also said that if Zimbra's client software would gain enough popularity it has all chances to replace the current default Evolution application.

Based in San Mateo, California, Zimbra Inc. company produces both client and server components. The most well know product made by Zimbra Inc. would be Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS), a groupware product. The ZCS Web Client supports email and group calendars uses a web interface through which there are enabled tool tips or draggable items and right-click menus in the user interface, written using the Zimbra Ajax Toolkit. The ZCS Server deals with a SOAP application programming interface and it is in the same time an IMAP and a POP3 server. It also provides various open source projects such as MySQL, Postfix or OpenLDAP and Lucene.
