France might be the new location

Assassin's Creed was one of the most interesting titles of last year, and perhaps Ubisoft's best new IP (Intellectual Property) in quite a while. It placed players under the hood of a 12th century assassin, named Altair, who needed to help his creed, or brotherhood, in avoiding an all-out war during the crusades in the Middle East.

In order to fulfill your mission, you needed to engage in not so legal activities, such as eavesdropping, pickpocketing or even beating hesitant witnesses who didn't want to share information with you. Besides these activities, common for an assassin, the game also introduced innovative free running mechanics, which allowed Altair to jump across the rooftops of various ancient Middle Eastern cities like Jerusalem or Damascus.

The game sold very well, managing to move over 6 million units, which made it a prime candidate for a sequel. Although this was only in rumor stage, a Ubisoft representative has just announced that a new game in the Assassin's Creed franchise was already under development. But sadly he made no other comment, which made a lot of people curios as to where this new game would take the story of Altair and the Creed.

Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter, shared his thoughts about this future game during a TV show; he casually said that the action of the new game would take place "hundreds of years into the future," and he speculated that the French revolution might be the central point of this game. Although this is still a rumor, Pachter made a few predictions that turned out to be true, but until we hear the official announcement from Ubisoft, this is still just speculation.

Although this sequel was on everybody's lips, especially if you consider the ending of the first game, the rumors specified a feudal Japan as the next destination for the franchise. This new assumption does seem to go against everything that has been said before. All that's left for us to do is wait and hope that Ubisoft will unveil new details in the following time frame.
