It's official: nearly all of the United States inhabitants have heard of Twitter and have been informed of its features, but only eight percent of them are actively using the service. A new report published by Edison Research/Arbitron has showed that as much as 92 percent of all Americans are familiar to the micro-blogging platform.

This is surely good news for the marketing team of Twitter, as the numbers have increased from the 87 percent recorded in 2010.

The survey was conducted on persons aged 12 and above and the results are based on their answers to the question: “Who has ever heard of Twitter?”.

As to the number of people actively using Twitter, this is a different matter altogether since they only represent about 8 percent of those who were interviewed.

It seems that this small fraction can be explained by the fact that they are tech-savvy enough to fully appreciate and put to use all the benefits of the platform.

Even so, it appears that Twitter has become a little more popular among active users as well since last year, considering that in 2010 there were 17 million users, and up to 20 million, in 2011.

While the adoption of the micro-blogging service might not look too good for the company, one should also keep in mind that this survey was conducted in United States alone, and that it does not illustrate the state of facts worldwide.

Despite the fact that the US are an important market for Twitter, it is not the only one available, since there are also regions that account for a great percentage of the total registered accounts.

On the other hand, the continuous ascension of Facebook’s popularity might prove to hinder the rise of Twitter on the long run, even though they are not similar in the services they provide.

In the end, we can only wait and see if Twitter manages to find the means to persuade users all over the world to create an account and use the platform, rather than just ‘be aware’ that it exists.
