Acer decided to come out and announce that one of its new mobile computers, a member of the TravelMate series in fact, has now made its way to the US market.

While most laptops in existence today are based on a central processor from Intel, there are still some mobile PCs that use AMD CPUs.

Most of these laptops emerged after Advanced Micro Devices actually delivered its own collection of laptop CPUs several months ago.

The new portable computer that Acer devised goes by the name of TravelMate 5542 and has a configuration centered around the AMD Athlon II P340 central processor.

This chip has a clock speed of 2.2 GHz and, in this case, is complemented by up to 4 GB of RAM, while video capabilities are delivered by the Radeon HD 4250 integrated graphics.

There is also a hard disk drive whose internal capacity can be of 250 GB or 320 GB.

Other specifications include a 15.6-inch HD display (1,366 x 768 pixels), Gigabit Ethernet, a 1.3 megapixel Crystal Eye webcam,. 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a 2-in-1 card reader and a DVD writer.

"Today’s mobile professional needs all the conveniences of the office no matter where their work takes them," said Gregg Prendergast, vice president of commercial sales and marketing for Acer America.

"The new TravelMate 5542 notebook series combines the latest mobile technologies, smart and comprehensive security features, and outstanding value for budget-conscious professionals," he added.

The Acer TravelMate 5542 is pre-loaded with the Microsoft Windows 7 Professional operating system and is aimed at business users.

It should already be selling in the US through Acer authorized resellers, at a starting price of $549.

Needless to say, end-users will have to pay more depending mainly on how much memory and storage they find themselves to be in the need of.
