A so-called personality map published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology this past October 14 shows which states in the US are the friendliest, which are the most temperamental and which are the most creative.

The map, made available to you in the picture above, was pieced together by researchers at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

As shown in the map, people in the South and Midwest tend to be friendly and conventional. Those on the East and West coasts are creative and relaxed, whereas individuals in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions are said to be temperamental and uninhibited.

According to Live Science, the researchers created this map with the help of data collected via questionnaires targeting psychological traits such as openness to experience, extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and neuroticism.

Commenting on this project and its outcome, researcher Peter J. Rentfrow said that, “This analysis challenges the standard methods of dividing up the country on the basis of economic factors, voting patterns, cultural stereotypes or geography that appear to have become ingrained in the way people think about the United States.”

“At the same time, it reinforces some of the traditional beliefs that some areas of the country are friendlier than others, while some are more creative,” he added.
