Speaking at Reuters’ Cybersecurity Summit in Washington, the US Navy’s chief of naval operations Jonathan Greenert revealed that cyber security and cyber warfare are as important to the government as nuclear strategy.

Greenert says that the US’s cyber program continues to benefit from serious investments, despite the recent budget cuts.

“The level of investment that we put into cyber in the department is as protected or as focused as it would be in strategic nuclear," Greenert said. “It's right up there, in the one-two area, above all other programs.”

Since much of the Navy’s infrastructure relies on computers, Greenert says it’s important to know not only how to protect information systems, but also how to exploit them, in case offensive action is required.

Like many US officials, the admiral believes that cyber will play an important role in the future of warfare.
