Last week, the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that a total of 10 of its servers were impacted by a data breach.

According to The New York Times, the incident – detected by US-CERT – caused public documents stored on the organization’s website, nhtsa.gov, to become inaccessible.

The agency’s representatives claimed the breach was “limited in scope.” The hackers have reportedly only gained access to servers that host publicly available information.

The 10 impacted machines have been disconnected from the Internet.

The source of the attack has not been disclosed by the agency.

US government websites are often targeted by hackers. Some of them simply want to show off their skills, while others, particularly state-sponsored cybercriminals, are always in search of sensitive information.
