As the debate continued on how to end the government shutdown, several shots were heard outside the US Capitol. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives were in session when it happened, with their members going into immediate lockdown.

Reuters reports that police engaged in a car chase up Constitution Avenue, towards the Capitol, as a suspect tried to make an escape in a black vehicle.

Within minutes, the shots were heard and the suspect, a woman, was killed in a fire exchange with officers, when she tried to ram into the police barricades.

The same media outlet notes that, as of now, there are reports of several injuries, including a police officer who was immediately rushed to the hospital.

The entire scene played out in only a few minutes, but police decided that the entire compound go under lockdown for an hour afterwards, as a precaution.

For the time being, these are all the details available. Check back for updates.
