Convert graphs to ASCII data at full scanner res.

UN-SCAN-IT is a piece of software on behalf of Silk Scientific Inc., that allows you to automatically convert hard copy graphs to (x,y) ASCII data at Full Scanner Resolution. It works with pretty much everything that scans or takes pictures, integrating peak areas, smoothening data, taking derivatives, re-scaling graphs, and ultimately exporting (x,y) ASCII data for use in other programs. Silk Scientific has recently updated its software.

UN-SCAN-IT works with any scanner, digital camera, or other image input device to digitize strip charts, instrumental output, old graphs, published graphs and so on. But here's a good example so everyone can understand what UN-SCAN-IT can do for you:

Have you ever had to "guess at the data values on a printed graph, hold two graphs up to a light to compare the features?" If you did, Silk Scientific advises to (first get the software of course) use the cut and weigh technique to find peak areas, or "squint and click" on each point with a digitizing tablet.

I'll bet this is the kind of stuff that NASA uses. You know, to compare footage and determine when a star or a planet has done something different in its "day-to-day activities." Neat huh?! Well, not so neat if you work for a firm that only deals with figures. Stars are something far more exciting to look at, analyze, compare and so on.

If you're already interested in a piece of software such as UN-SCAN-IT, here's a bunch of highlighted features for you:

With UN-SCAN-IT you can compare and analyze data from graphs that are on different scales, digitize, re-scale and append graphs, background subtract, smoothen data, find peak areas, store hard copy output in digital (x,y) form on disk, save in (x,y) ASCII format and of course more.

Its most notable features include full Scanner Resolution Digitizing, 10,000 data points per minute, 25,000 data points per file, 10 different digitizing resolutions, JPG, TIFF, BMP, JPG, GIF, TGA, PICT, PCX, (and other image format) digitizing, Manual Mode (point and click digitizing - emulates a digitizing tablet), symbol recognition, live on-screen graphics and more.

With this version (5.2 for Mac OS X), users benefit from stuff like Drag and Drop Setup, Grayscale Data Recognition, Data Eraser, Polar Coordinate Digitizing and more.
