Leading supplier of solutions that enable delivery of mobile services over broadband Kineto Wireless, Inc., announced a few days ago the release of an updated version of its Smart Wi-Fi Application, aimed at handsets running under Google's Android 2.2 Froyo

operating system.

According to the company, its software solution is based on the 3GPP UMA/GAN standard, and has been designed so as to transform an existing Wi-Fi access point into an extension of the mobile network.

Through the use of the Smart Wi-Fi application, users can eliminate indoor mobile coverage problems though taking advantage of their voice and data services over Wi-Fi networks.

Moreover, the company announced that the Smart Wi-Fi Application has been developed so as to offer wireless services providers the possibility to address network coverage and capacity issues.

Smartphones have highlighted the coverage and capacity challenges of mobile networks, especially in indoor locations,” said Mark Powell, vice president and general manager of Kineto's Client Business Unit and co-founder of the company.

“Operators have started to look to Wi-Fi, already installed in many homes and offices, to address these issues. To capitalize on this growing demand, we have now enhanced our Smart Wi-Fi Application to support the latest version of Android and validated it with the leading Android smartphone manufacturers.”

Kineto also announced that it is currently working with various mobile phone makers and with wireless carriers around the world to pre-load the solution on Android devices.

Additional info on how the mobile application works can be extracted from the video embedded below, which provides a demo of the app on Samsung Galaxy S (which is an Android 2.1-based device).

“Wi-Fi continues to be the predominant wireless technology in the home. A study conducted by Arbitron earlier this year found that 62 percent of US broadband-connected households already had Wi-Fi installed,” Kineto notes.

Kineto's Smart Wi-Fi Application enables wireless carriers to “extract the maximum benefit of Wi-Fi for their networks and their subscribers,” the company concludes. More info can be found here.
