Wii Fit beaten down

Finally, a new videogame release has managed to kick Wii Fit, the Nintendo best seller, off the number one spot in the United Kingdom chart. The move was perfectly executed by UFC 2009: Undisputed, the THQ published fighting game that is the beginning of a new franchise for the company, one that could go over WWE to become the best selling for the publisher.

And when Wii Fit goes down, it falls pretty low, as this week, it is out of the top three completely, languishing in fourth. Pokemon Platinum, created by Nintendo for the DS, sits at number two in the chart, also in its first week on sale, showing that “You've got to catch them all!” is still a powerful marketing catch phrase.

EA Sports Active from EA Sports takes the third spot in the top. It will be interesting to see if the Electronic Arts fitness title manages to be as interesting to gamers in the long term as Wii Fit.

FIFA 09 continues a great run at number five, although it went down by no less than three places, while X-Men Origins: Wolverine also lost popularity. Wii Play is at number seven, coming up from nine, while Mario Kart Wii and My Fitness Coach hold the last two places in the top ten. As more summer releases appear, including Prototype and inFamous, the United Kingdom top ten is set to see more changes.

As all the three top spots are occupied by new entries, some of the games that had long term presences in the top ten are now out, like Call of Duty: World at War, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and Resident Evil 5. One new title that had a rather disappointing behavior was Bionic Commando from Capcom, which aims to update the classic platformer by introducing 3D movement and graphics.
