Samsung has just released the long-awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Sprint Epic 4G Touch smartphone.

The South Korean company has also announced there’s a new software update available for US Cellular’s version of Galaxy S II.

Unfortunately, it’s not the hotly anticipated Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, instead it’s a maintenance update that brings new security features and fixes some issues.

Software update FF18 for the U.S. Cellular Samsung Galaxy S II (SCH-R760) is available for download via SimpleDL tool using a Windows PC. Obviously, this software upgrade is only valid for the U.S. Cellular Galaxy S II, so don’t try installing it on other models.

Make sure the phone’s battery is fully charged prior to upgrading, and back up all information, even though this update was created to upgrade the operating system while leaving certain types of user data intact.

For example, pictures, videos, messages and contacts will remain on the device even after the upgrade, while others, such as wallpapers and ringtones assigned, may be reset back to factory default.

Keep in mind that this software update for US Cellular Galaxy S II is not available OTA (over the air), so make sure you install the Simple Upgrade Tool application on your Windows PC in order to download the FF18 software update.

The official changelog of the update mentions the following changes:

- Google security patches; - When an SMS or MMS message is received and the message memory is full, touching the received message will open to the active thread list allowing you to delete older messages; - CityID version is upgrade from 1.2.25 to 1.2.27; - Fix: GPS related issues; - Fix: Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync word wrap; - Fix: City ID font size correction; - Fix: Factory reset issues.

It looks like US Cellular is now the only carrier in the States that has yet to deliver the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the Galaxy S II. Stay tuned for more info on the subject.
