Tyra Banks, no matter how annoying certain media outlets deem her or her show, is a very active booster of the morale of the average woman, often tackling issues such as self-confidence and standardization of the female beauty on her talk show. On this note, the upcoming season of the show will have a very special premiere, with the former model naming September 8 the National Real Hair Day, as EW Popwatch can confirm.

What will happen on the first episode of the Tyra Banks show is that both the model and her guests will be rocking their real hair and nothing more, in a bid to show the world that a woman’s beauty does not necessarily lie in her weaves, extensions or the countless hours she spends to get her hair done. This, in turn, will boost women’s confidence in themselves and help them understand that it’s them who make the fake hair look good and not the other way around, Tyra believes.

“This season on The Tyra Show we’re taking it to the next level and getting more real than ever before by encouraging women everywhere to own and rock what they’ve got and be proud! For the Season 5 premiere, I will be doing just that – no fake hair, I’m rocking my REAL hair. This will all be going down on September 8, 2009, which we’re declaring National Real Hair Day! We welcome everyone to go natural with me!” Banks says of the season premiere.

Clearly ecstatic about the idea and the message behind it, Tyra then takes to Twitter to dish out more on the upcoming national “holiday.” “Guess What! I’m rockin’ my REAL hair on my talk show September 8th. No fake hair at all! Will be the hair coming out of my scalp! 4 all 2 C! No ponytails, no ballet bun head. hair will be out and free!” Trya writes.

What with the apparent honesty and everything, some media outlets can’t help but wonder about the real motives behind Tyra’s self-esteem campaign, such as is the case of the aforementioned Entertainment Weekly. It is much easier, come to think of it, for her to prophesize loving one’s inner-self when said self happens to pertain to someone as beautiful as Tyra is. On the other hand, EW admits, this also means that models too, no matter how perfect we might perceive them as being, have flaws and need “help” to look this good.
