Facebook dominance of the social space is undeniable, but it still has a few hold-out countries. Brazil is one of them and it's the last place where Google's solution, Orkut, still reigns and by a safe margin.

According to the latest data from comScore, Orkut is still the number one social networking site in Brazil with more than 29 million visitors in August.

Facebook, meanwhile, is the third such site with over 9 million visitors. It's growing at a huge pace there as in the rest of the world, but it's still got a lot of catching up to do.

The second most popular social network, or rather social site, in Brazil is probably going to take most people by surprise, it's Microsoft's Windows Live.

“Social media accounts for nearly 20 percent of Brazilians’ time spent online, making it one of the top online activities in the country,” explained Alex Banks, comScore managing director for Brazil and vice president for Latin America.

“As the ninth largest Internet market in the world and one of the fastest growing, Brazil offers global marketers large and growing opportunities to reach consumers, with the social networking market representing one of the most efficient ways of doing that,” he added.

Orkut is clearly the most popular social networking in the country, with 29.4 million visitors. But it's not just the number of visitors that counts, the time they spend on the site show that it's the preferred tool.

The average user spent 275.8 minutes on Orkut in August. By contrast, users spent only 29.3 minutes on Facebook and just 5.5 minutes on Windows Live Profile.

The most notable player in Brazil has to be Twitter though. The site has seen the biggest adoption of any country where it's available. 23 percent of the internet users in Brazil use Twitter.

Twitter is the fourth larges social network, very close to Facebook in terms of visitors. The average user actually spends more time on Twitter than on Facebook, 31.8 minutes versus 29.3 minutes. [via RWW]
