And a total of four new themes to choose from

With more and more people using Twitter with mobile or desktop clients, it looks like even Biz is beginning to doubt the site as a viable alternative. Still, it hasn't abandoned the idea altogether and for those that actually do use the website, even as a secondary alternative, there are now four more official themes to choose from. And, finally, the default theme matches the design of the new homepage for users who aren't logged in.

New by Twitter standards anyway, as the homepage was launched a couple of months back. Slow as it may be, it is a step in the right direction, as Twitter's design problems seem to deepen with every new feature it introduces. Thankfully, that only happens once every few months.

In late July, the microblogging site introduced a new homepage to make it easier for newcomers to understand the site and what was available. It added the search feature front and center, trending topics, it became a page that was actually useful for something other than logging in or setting up an account.

But, while the homepage featured a new design with some sensible changes, the rest of the site remained unchanged, making for a big discrepancy, which, especially for new users, the ones that the changes were made for in the first place, was disconcerting. Thankfully, while it doesn't change any of the core functionality, the new default theme should at least make for a more unified experience.

There are now 16 default themes and all of them can be completely customized. Here's Biz Stone's full announcement: “If you like using Twitter.com as your Twitter client, then you might be interested to know that we've added four more themes to the design collection. We've also updated the default theme and avatar to match our front page. If you prefer the classic default theme, it's still there and you can change it back. To change your Twitter page design, visit Settings > Design.”
