14 DAY TRIAL // A new flavor of the Twitter application is now available for download for the owners of Android devices, namely version 4.1.4.
The main enhancement included in the new application release is login verification, a new form of two-factor authentication that can be turned on and managed straight from the application.
Furthermore, the new app iteration packs a new gallery view for photos in search results (available via a “View more photos” option), improved overall search capabilities, and a variety of other bug fixes and enhancements.
With the new Twitter for Android installed on their devices and with Login verification turned on, users can ensure that their accounts are safer than before.
According to Twitter, the new authentication method does not require users to enter a phone number, as the previously available SMS-based login verification did.
Instead, it takes advantage of push messaging and in-application approvals, which makes it available for all users with Internet access.
Basically, they will be informed of any login attempts on their accounts, and can approve or deny requests, all through the updated application.
“When a login request is made, you will see browser details and approximate location in the app. If you receive an approval request from halfway across the world, you may be getting phished,” Twitter notes in a blog post.
To enable the new feature, users will need to head over to Settings when in the Me tab in the application, tap their names, and then go to Security.
As soon as Login verification has been turned on, they will see a backup code being generated. The code should be stored securely, so that the account can be accessed at times when the phone is not within reach.
“After you enroll in login verification, you’ll use the Twitter application to approve requests each time you sign in to twitter.com with your username and password,” Twitter explains.
