Summit Entertainment, the movie studio that brought us “The Twilight Saga,” has acquired the rights for “Highlander,” the 1986 hit about the clan of immortals. “Twilight” scribe Melissa Rosenberg will be handling the script.

Details on the remake are still vague, but The Hollywood Reporter says Rosenberg will most certainly be working on the script for it.

She may seem like an odd choice for the job because of her “Twilight” connection – especially for non Twi-hards and true fans of the original “Highlander” – but THR believes she has what it takes to deliver an amazing script.

Not only is she a household name with Summit, but she’s already proved she can handle character, dialog and action very well. And not just in “Twilight” either.

“As the sole writer on Summit’s vampire pentalogy, she has proved adept at handling both character and action, as well as yearning, a key component of Highlander as protagonist Connor MacLeod watches his true love age while he does not,” THR writes.

“Before tackling Twilight, Rosenberg was a writer/co-executive producer on Dexter, the Showtime series that darkly balances family with bloody carnage,” the same report says.

For those not familiar with the series, suffice it to say that it’s one of Showtime’s biggest (if not actually the biggest) to date, enjoying success with both critics and fans.

Even so, nothing is set in stone just yet: Rosenberg is still in negotiations. It is believed her still having one script for the vampire saga to pen – “Breaking Dawn Part 2” – will lead to some scheduling issues.

“Neal Moritz is producing the project, which offers an update on the 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. Justin Lin (Fast Five) is attached to direct. Peter Davis is also producing,” THR further notes of the remake.

As of now, no lead actors have been attached to star in the remake but, since the project is still in its initial stages, there’s plenty of time to discuss that.
